SILVER STAR CITATION
AWARDED FOR ACTIONS DURING Korean War Service: Army; Battalion: 3d Battalion; Division: 25th Infantry Division GENERAL ORDERS: Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 322 (June 4, 1951)
CITATION: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ralliegh Dwane Cullison, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in Korea. On 4 April 1951, while advancing on a commanding hill near Chudong-ni, Korea, Corporal Cullison's unit encountered heavy resistance from a strong hostile force. Although wounded at the beginning of the engagement, he moved his machine gun to an exposed vantage point to direct more effective fire at the onrushing foe. When his weapon developed a malfunction, he continued to fire single shots at the encircling enemy until he lapsed into unconsciousness from his wounds. Corporal Cullison's valorous initiative and unwavering devotion to duty were instrumental in repelling the attack and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the American Soldier.
FIRST ARMY DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION (PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION)
As authorized by executive order 9396 and in the name of the President of the United States, the Distinguished Unit Citation is awarded to:
THE 27TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION, AND ATTACHED UNITS
CITATION: The 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, and attached units, are cited for exceptionally outstanding performance of duty in combat against the armed enemy in Korea during the period 21 through 24 August 1950. On 21 August, the enemy had massed an infantry division plus two regiments supported by armor and artillery in an effort to break through United Nations Forces and seize Taugu, Korea, site of the Eighth Army Headquarters and a strategic rail and highway center. By skillful, defensive deployment and through courageous and tenacious fighting by all personnel of the regiment and supporting forces, the determined defenders not only held but improved their positions. Through the 74-hour period, the enemy attacked with fanatical fury, yet in the face of these screaming “banzai” charges the men of the 27th Infantry Regiment bravely and coolly held their fire until the enemy closed, and then literally blasted them into annihilation. Infiltration and flanking attacks carried to the regimental command post and rear echelon positions; all personnel became engaged in the action. The entire command, involved in close combat, displayed indomitable courage in stopping the many fanatical charges and denying the enemy an important terrain corridor leading to Taegu. The steadfast courage with which the members of the 27th Infantry Regiment and supporting units held their positions in the face of vastly greater enemy forces reflects the highest combat credit on the command and is in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the Army of the United States.
SECOND ARMY DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION (PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION)
As authorized by executive order 9396 and in the name of the President of the United States, the Distinguished Unit Citation is awarded to:
CITATION: The 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, and attached units, are cited for outstanding performance of duty and extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy in spearheading an amphibious assault across the Han River in Korea on 7 March 1951. Following an intense artillery bombardment by friendly forces on the enemy positions on the other side of the river, the leading elements crossed the river in assault boats and moved rapidly and aggressively toward their assigned objectives. These leading elements were forced to cross an exposed beachhead of 700 yards completely devoid of any natural cover, which was under a devastating barrage of artillery, mortar, machine-gun, and small-arms fire from a well-entrenched and determined enemy estimated at regimental strength. The friendly troops pressed the attack with such a zeal and unrelenting fury that the enemy, after suffering heavy casualties, fled in panic and disorder, abandoning large quantities of equipment, weapons and ammunition. Possessed of a high degree of spirit and audacity from their recent victory, the 3d Battalion and attached units moved on to the next objectives. The enemy positions were now more formidably and fanatically defended, but the hostile forces, unwillingly and stubbornly, were forced to give ground under the tremendous onslaught of the 3d Battalion and attached units. Finally, with resolute persistence and courageous demeanor, the friendly troops succeeded in battering the hostile regiment until it could no longer muster an attack and was considered neutralized. The 3d Battalion and attached units, by their heroic deeds, breached the Han River line and opened an avenue for further pursuit of the enemy to the north. The 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, and attached units displayed such gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps in accomplishing their missions under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions as to set them apart and above other units participating in the campaign. The heroism, audacity, and courage exhibited by the members of these units in denying the enemy a vital strategic vantage area reflect great credit on themselves, their organizations, and the military service of the United States.
FIRST REPUBLIC OF KOREA PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION
By Order of the Secretary of the Army, the Presidential Unit Citation has been awarded by the President of the Republic of Korea to:
TWENTY-FIFTH INFANTRY DIVISION, UNITED STATES ARMY
CITATION: For the unprecedented shifts on the night of 1-2 August 1950 from the Army’s right to left flank, for its rapid organization of defenses in the Masan area and for its counterattack against three North Korean Divisions in the Chinju area. This counterattack, and the inclusive actions from 1 August to 11 August 1950 so disorganized the enemy’s advance that it was never later able, despite repeated and heavy attacks, to advance and capture the port of Pusan. This marked and brilliant performance of duty by each individual member of the 25th United States Infantry Division is in accord with the highest traditions of the military service.
SECOND REPUBLIC OF KOREA PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION
By Order of the Secretary of the Army, the Presidential Unit Citation has been awarded by the President of the Republic of Korea to:
2D LOGISTICAL COMMAND, AND ATTACHED UNITS (INCLUDING 27TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION)
CITATION: The 2d Logistical Command was activated on 19 September 1950 and given the mission of receiving and forwarding supplies to the Eighth United States Army in Korea and its attached units. This army included more than twice the number for which the 2d Logistical Command was organized to support, yet the mission was accomplished in spite of additional handicaps such as terrain, climate, and lack of proper facilities. Under the direction of the 2d Logistical Command, thousands of civilian refugees were provided with food and clothing after having been evacuated from the Hungnam area in North Korea. Medicine and medical equipment were supplied the sick and wounded while orphanages were established for the Korean children who were afflicted by war’s devastation. Additional support for the civilian population was made possible by the introduction of electric power barges in Pusan, Masan and Inchon, and by the installation of additional water mains in the overcrowded city of Pusan. The 7th Transportation Medium Port handled more than twice the amount of cargo which its larger counterpart, a Major Port, is designed to handle, and other subsidiaries of the 2d Logistical Command distributed cargo throughout Korea. The Chinese Communist spring offensive of 1951 was contained by the Eighth United States Army in Korea and its attached units from all nations because it had been adequately supplied by the 2d Logistical Command over bridges, highways and railroads which were still being built or repaired. By April 1952 normal rail service had been restored on the Korean National Railway in the rear areas even though it was still a combat zone, and passengers could again travel from Pusan to Seoul in 11 hours. Another monumental accomplishment was the operation of Prisoner-of-War camps in which 170,000 experienced a standard of living surpassing the requirements of the Rules of Warfare as adopted by the Geneva Convention, and with security and sanitation measures of such high caliber as to protect the adjacent civilian population. The efficiency with which the responsibilities of the 2d Logistical Command were discharged was due to the individual efforts of everyone concerned, and the resulting service, rendered to the nations of the free world, is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army, the military service and the United Nations.
