Chief Warrant Officer 2 Sparks was a member of 48th Aviation Company, 11th Aviation Group. On March 19, 1971, he was the co-pilot of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1C) covering a downed U.S. helicopter on the Laotian border. His helicopter was hit and he made an emergency landing. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered.
