Farragut-class destroyer, commissioned January 15, 1935
Date of Enlistment: December 4, 1940 Home or Place of Enlistment: Priest River, Idaho Date of Loss: January 12, 1943
Previously assigned to USS West Virginia (BB-48) in Aug. 1941. Transferred to USS Worden (DD-352) on Dec. 9, 1941, after the West Virginia was sunk at the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7. Anderson died while conducting combat operations in support of the occupation of Amchitka Island in the Aleutian Islands. While guarding the transport Arthur Middleton (AP-55) in Constantine Harbor, the Worden struck the rocky shore, became grounded, then broached and began breaking up in the surf. After the commanding officer ordered abandon ship and that effort was underway, EM3c Anderson was swept overboard into the wintry seas by a heavy wave that broke over the ship and was lost at sea.
