Killed/Missing in Action when a torpedo struck the bow of the ship abreast of turret one and exploded the ship's forward ammunition magazines and aviation gasoline storage at the Battle of Tassafaronga during the Guadalcanal Campaign. The Battle of Tassafaronga, sometimes referred to as the Fourth Battle of Savo Island, was a nighttime naval battle that took place on November 30, 1942 between United States Navy and Imperial Japanese Navy warships during the Guadalcanal campaign. The battle took place in Ironbottom Sound near the Tassafaronga area on Guadalcanal.
