TO: CHARLES W. MURPHY JR., Capt., Infantry, posthumous.
FOR: On Feb 3, 1944, in the Kwajalein campaign, Capt. Murphy led his Infantry company in mopping up operations in territory strongly defended from enemy pillboxes. He encountered a friendly tank firing to the flank on an isolated enemy strong point. Though unknown to the tank crew, their fire was falling on friendly troops which had moved into the line. In the face of small arms fire, Capt. Murphy leaped onto the tank, pulled open the turret and ordered the firing to cease. A few minutes later, Capt. Murphy was killed leading his Infantry against the enemy. |
